New issue is out: what five years of soil samples say about the valley. Long read, no paywall.

Your server sets the rules. Ocoya asks it for them and composes to fit.

Per-server limits

Your server’s rules, not our guess.

Every Mastodon server sets its own limits — how long a post can be, how many photos you can add. Ocoya asks yours before you write, so if your server allows a thousand characters you get a thousand, instead of being cut short at somebody else’s five hundred.

  • Your server’s own post length, not a number we picked
  • Photo limits too — some servers allow twice as many
  • Links measured the way your server measures them

Same post, three servers, three different amounts of room. A tool that assumes 500 everywhere would cut the middle one in half for no reason at all.

Content warnings

A CW is part of the post, not an afterthought.

Add a warning per account in the composer and it publishes as the post’s content warning, with the body collapsed behind it — the convention the fediverse actually runs on, for spoilers, heavy topics and long threads.

Write past your server’s cap and the caption is split into a chain of self-replies, so it reads as one thread rather than several loose posts.

Long thread — soil contamination data

Five years of samples from the lower valley, and the numbers are worse than the 2021 report suggested. Full data and method in the linked issue. 1/6

CW set per account

The fediverse takes content warnings seriously. Add one per account in the composer and it goes out as the post’s CW, with the body collapsed behind it.

What Mastodon accepts

Whatever your server says it accepts.

These are the usual Mastodon defaults. Your own server may be more generous, and Ocoya will go by its numbers rather than these.

ServersAny Mastodon instance
One postWhatever your server allows
Whole captionUp to 5,000 characters
Longer postsPublished as a thread
MediaImages, GIFs and video, 4 by default
Per postOptional content warning

Connecting asks your server to read your account, so the connection can be named, and to write statuses and media, which is what publishing needs. You sign in on your own server — your password never reaches Ocoya.

Left X? You probably landed in two places.

Most people who moved are now posting to Mastodon and Bluesky, and often still to X. Write the post once, pick all three, and each gets it at the same minute under its own character limit — threads split where that network needs them to.

Post it without opening the app

Point a workflow at your blog’s feed and every new piece can announce itself on your timeline — written by an AI agent, published at the hour you set.
